What is the X2 Visa?
The X2 visa is for short-term study in China — specifically, programs lasting less than 180 days. This covers most private language school courses, summer intensives, and semester exchanges.
Unlike the X1 visa, the X2 does not require a physical examination or conversion to a residence permit after arrival. You enter on the visa, study, and leave before it expires. Simple.
Key facts
- Valid for the duration of your course (up to 180 days)
- Single or double entry (varies by country)
- No residence permit required
- Cannot work legally on this visa
- Extensions possible in some cities, but not guaranteed
Requirements
The bar is lower than the X1 visa, but you still need to prove you are a genuine student with means to support yourself.
- Valid passport — With at least 6 months validity and blank pages.
- Admission letter (JW202 or school letter) — Your school provides this after you enroll and pay a deposit.
- Visa application form (Form V.2013) — Fill online, print, sign.
- Recent passport photo — White background, 33mm x 48mm. Many photo shops in Chinatowns know the exact spec.
- Proof of funds or sponsorship — Bank statement showing ~$3,000–5,000, or a sponsor letter with their bank statement.
- Flight itinerary — Round-trip booking or proof of onward travel. Some centers accept a reservation without full payment.
- Cover letter — Not always required, but strongly recommended. Explain why you want to study in China.
Application Steps
- Choose and enroll in a school — Apply directly to the language school or university. Most require a deposit ($200–500) before issuing the admission letter.
- Receive admission documents — The school sends you an admission letter and JW202 form (or a school-specific letter for short courses). This can take 1–4 weeks.
- Book your visa appointment — Use the China Visa Application Service Center website for your country. Appointments fill up in peak seasons.
- Prepare documents — Print everything. Double-check photo specs. Organize in a folder in the order listed on the website.
- Attend appointment — Arrive 15 minutes early. Bring cash for fees. Be polite but brief. Answer questions honestly.
- Collect passport — Standard processing is 4 working days. Express (2–3 days) costs extra.

Fees
| Fee | Amount (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| School deposit | $200–500 | Usually deducted from tuition |
| Visa application fee | $140 | Varies by nationality; US citizens pay more |
| Express processing | $25–50 | Optional; 2–3 day turnaround |
| Photo printing | $10–15 | If you do not bring your own |
| Document copies | $5–10 | Bring your own to save money |
| Flight (round trip) | $500–1,200 | Varies wildly by season and origin |
Common Mistakes
- Wrong photo size — The 33x48mm spec is specific. US passport photos (2x2 inches) are rejected. Get the right size.
- Incomplete application form — Every field must be filled. "N/A" is better than blank. Print double-sided? Some centers reject this.
- Insufficient funds proof — Show a buffer above the minimum. A $3,001 balance looks suspicious.
- Applying too late — Peak season (July–August) means appointment slots vanish. Book early.
