X2 Visa Requirements

Who qualifies and what you need to apply.

Who Qualifies

The X2 visa is designed for anyone enrolling in a short-term academic or language program in China that lasts less than 180 days. This includes:

  • Private language school students (1-week to 6-month courses)
  • University exchange students on semester programs
  • Summer program participants
  • Research interns (non-degree, short-term)

You do not qualify if your program is 6 months or longer (apply for X1), if you plan to work (apply for Z), or if you are just traveling (apply for L).

Financial Requirements

China wants to know you can support yourself without working illegally. There is no official minimum, but in practice:

  • Show at least $3,000–5,000 in your account (or equivalent)
  • The funds should have been in your account for at least a month (sudden large deposits look suspicious)
  • A sponsor (parent, spouse) can provide their bank statement plus a signed sponsorship letter
  • Scholarship award letters count as financial proof

Age Limits

There is no official age limit for the X2 visa, but applicants over 60 may face extra scrutiny. Some schools also have informal age preferences. If you are older, a clear, well-written cover letter explaining your study goals helps enormously.

Country-Specific Notes

United States

US citizens pay $140 for a single-entry visa regardless of validity. Multiple-entry is available for the same price in some cases. The Los Angeles and New York centers are busiest — book early.

United Kingdom

UK citizens pay £151 for standard processing. The London center accepts walk-ins but queues are long. Manchester and Edinburgh also have centers.

Australia

Australian citizens pay AUD 109.50. Sydney and Melbourne centers require online appointments. Processing is generally smooth.
