Step 1: Choose a School

Not all schools can issue the documents you need for an X2 visa. Confirm before paying anything:

  • Does the school have a license to enroll foreign students?
  • Will they provide an admission letter and a JW202 form (or equivalent)?
  • How long does document issuance take?
  • Is the deposit refundable if your visa is rejected?

Red flag

Some private schools promise visa documents but delay for months. Check reviews from past students. If a school asks for full tuition upfront before issuing documents, be cautious.

Step 2: Apply and Pay Deposit

Most schools require a completed application form, passport copy, and a deposit. Deposits range from $200–500 and are usually deducted from your total tuition.

Keep all receipts and email confirmations. You may need to show payment proof at the visa center.

Step 3: Receive Documents

Schools typically send documents by express courier (DHL, FedEx). Delivery takes 3–7 days internationally. Check everything immediately:

  • Is your name spelled exactly as in your passport?
  • Are the dates correct?
  • Does the admission letter have the school's official stamp?
  • Is the JW202 form signed and stamped?

Errors here are the #1 cause of visa delays. If anything is wrong, contact the school immediately for a corrected document.

Step 4: Book Appointment

Go to the China Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) website for your country. Create an account, fill the online form, and select an appointment slot.

Peak seasons (July–August, December–January) fill up weeks in advance. Book as soon as you have your documents.

Step 5: Attend Appointment

Arrive 15 minutes early. Bring:

  • Your passport (original)
  • Printed and signed application form
  • Passport photo (correct size)
  • All supporting documents (originals + copies)
  • Cash or card for visa fee (check what your center accepts)

The officer may ask basic questions: "Why do you want to study in China?" "Who is paying?" "Where will you live?" Answer calmly and concisely.

Step 6: Collect Visa

Standard processing: 4 working days. Express: 2–3 days. You will get a pickup slip with a date. Bring it and your ID.

Check the visa sticker immediately. Verify your name, passport number, dates, and number of entries. Errors on the sticker are rare but can strand you at the border.
