X1 Visa Documents

Every document explained with common mistakes.

Passport

Same requirements as X2: 6+ months validity, blank pages, no damage. For X1, you also need enough validity to cover your entire program plus the residence permit processing time.

Tip

If your passport expires within 12 months of your program end date, renew it before applying. Transferring a residence permit to a new passport is a bureaucratic nightmare.

JW201 / JW202 Form

This is the official Chinese government form that authorizes your study. Your university applies for it — you cannot do this yourself.

FormWho gets itProcessing timeValid for
JW201CSC scholarship students4–8 weeks6 months
JW202Self-funded students4–8 weeks6 months

The JW form has an expiry date. If it expires before you apply for your visa, the university must apply for a new one. This is rare but can happen if delays pile up.

Admission Letter

Must be the original (not a copy) with the university's official red stamp and a signature. Check:

  • Your name matches your passport exactly
  • Program dates are correct
  • It specifies whether you are a degree student or language student
  • The stamp is clear and not faded

Physical Examination Record

The Foreigner Physical Examination Form is a standardized document. It must be completed by a licensed doctor and stamped by the hospital or clinic.

Some countries require this at the visa application stage; others accept a China-based exam after arrival. Check with your visa center.

Tests included:

  • Blood test (HIV, syphilis, liver function)
  • Chest X-ray (tuberculosis screening)
  • ECG
  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • General physical (height, weight, vision, blood pressure)

Financial Proof

The threshold is higher than X2. Show:

  • Bank statements for the last 3–6 months
  • Balance of $5,000–10,000 (or equivalent)
  • Stable transaction history — no sudden suspicious deposits
  • If sponsored: sponsor's bank statement, sponsor letter, sponsor's ID, and proof of relationship

Police Registration

Not needed for the visa application, but essential for the residence permit. Within 24 hours of arriving at your accommodation:

  • Dorm students: the university registers you automatically
  • Private renters: go to the local police station with passport, lease, and landlord's ID card
  • Hotels: they register you at check-in (keep the receipt)

The police give you a registration slip. You need this for your residence permit application. Do not lose it.
