Shanghai

International, Expensive, Fast

Vibe

Shanghai is China's most international city. The Bund's colonial architecture faces Pudong's sci-fi skyline across the Huangpu River. You can eat at a Michelin-starred restaurant at noon and street dumplings at midnight. It is dazzling, overwhelming, and never boring.

For language learners, Shanghai is a paradox. The best schools in China are here. The expat community is huge. You can survive entirely in English if you want to — which is exactly the problem. Many students find their Mandarin progress slower here because it is too easy to fall back on English.

The pace is relentless. People walk faster, talk faster, and work longer. If you thrive on energy and ambition, Shanghai will push you. If you want a gentle introduction to China, this is not it.

Cost of Living

Shanghai is China's most expensive city. Rent in central districts can rival London or New York. But you can live more cheaply if you accept a longer commute and local restaurants.

Language Schools

Shanghai has the widest range of Chinese programs in China, from elite universities to boutique private schools.

  • Fudan University — Arguably the best Chinese language program in China. Extremely competitive, rigorous, and prestigious. Semester cost ~$2,500–3,500.
  • Shanghai Jiao Tong University — Excellent program with strong business Chinese focus. Good for students with professional goals.
  • East China Normal University (ECNU) — Popular with international students. Well-organized, good support services. ~$2,000–3,000/semester.
  • Private language schools — Abundant. Group classes $400–800/month. 1-on-1 $30–60/hour. Quality varies enormously — do trial lessons.

Visa Processing

Professional but crowded

Shanghai's visa center is the busiest in China. Book appointments weeks in advance during peak seasons (July–August, December–January). Standard processing is 4 working days. The center is in Hongkou district; arrive early.

PSB offices for extensions are numerous but always packed. Many students use visa agents to handle paperwork. It costs $50–100 but saves hours of queuing.

Bottom Line

Shanghai is for the student who wants the best resources and does not mind paying for them. The schools are world-class, the social scene is unmatched, and the convenience is total. But the cost is real, the pace is exhausting, and the English bubble can slow your progress. If you have the budget and the discipline to stay in Chinese, Shanghai offers everything. If you are budget-conscious or want a gentler start, look elsewhere.
